The world has changed.
Take a look around: businesses nowadays are require to deliver faster, better and cheaper solution to a problem or need. Nobody really cares that sometimes such demand are as absurd as demanding to buy a brand-new BMW car on a bargain price; it’s simply what works today.
As in buiding a website. Most people don’t have a clue when it comes to pricing a website. From what they heard most, it’s dirt-cheap. Some guys are even willing to do a full-fledged website development for merely US$50, including all the nuts and bolts. Wow… it still amazes me when they do that. How did they cover the costs? They’re living on,… what?! Darn, but what sad is: that what people choose to believe.
I’m really not trying to exaggerate things here, but the reality is: these websites were not built by a bunch of monkeys typing strings of codes continually behind the scene with peanut butter and bananas as their payment. Read my lips: BAN-NAN-NA. Did anyone get it?
No, it’s not just about building a website. Some people might say that almost everyone, including their 12-years old cousin can do that (well, good luck with your cousin), but building a website that works is UTTERLY DIFFERENT with just building a website. That’s what makes the difference between the dollars you paid for your website.
Some built with contingency plan on it, just in case ‘shit’ happens and things spinning out of control; some built with ‘as-is’ in their agreement clause (that’s if they can afford to print any agreement) and had somehow mastered the art of ninjutsu when it comes to successfully hid themselves in the deep vest of the forest once problems with the recently-launched website arises. They’d better pray hard that it will never happen.
A good colleague of mine, fellow in the same web development business, had once said something that I’ve embraced as a practical, profoundly true and worthy quote. He said:
“A dirt-cheap website built not with the customer in mind; It was built for speed of completion for whatever the cost. Someday, this ghost of the past will come back to haunt you in the ghastly apparition of troublesome updates and maintenance, sans the hours that you should pay for in advanced for the support that you need.
But those which were carefully built and planned for at the first place; though deliberately cost more and took longer time to built, will someday prove their worth in form of versatility of maintenance and flexibility in upgrade.”
Now, doesn’t that ring the bell?
So, what’s the true cost of building your website?
What are key differences between websites that work and those that don’t?
